ArtScapades presents the following lectures:
French Impressionism: From Studio to Plein Air – ArtScapades gives the history of factors that brought the movement to Paris including the redesign of the city, the growth of the café culture, the impact of the Industrial Revolution, and advances in materials and technology. This lecture chronicles the life of four artists and their works, Édouard Manet, Claude Monet, Pierre Auguste Renoir, and Berthe Morisot.
Women of Impressionism: From French to American – ArtScapades begins with a very brief look at women over time in the art world. From the barriers they traditionally faced, to the effect of the changing times on women’s acceptance in male artistic circles, the lecture sets the scene for the women who found success in the French Impressionist style. This lecture looks at the lives and works of three women artists, two French, Marie Bracquemond and Berthe Morisot, and one American, Mary Cassatt, who despite being American, was considered a French Impressionist. All three broke through the restraints of society and exhibited works that were as innovative as those of their male counterparts.
East Meets West: From Japonism to Impressionism – ArtScapades looks at the influence of Japanese art and culture on French and American Impressionism. The lecture looks at how Japanese art came to the attention of the West and highlights the elements that found their way in to the art of the day. This lecture looks at two of Japan’s master printmakers, Hokusai and Hiroshige, and their influence on well known names of the Impressionist movement including Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Mary Cassatt, William Merritt Chase and Childe Hassam.
Post-Impressionism: From the Ballet to the Moulin Rouge – ArtScapades will explore how Post-Impressionists both extended Impressionism while rejecting its limitations; the artists continued using vivid colors, a thick application of paint and real-life subject matter, but were more inclined to emphasize geometric forms, distort forms for an expressive effect and use unnatural and seemingly random colors. This lecture includes a look at the lives and works of Edgar Degas, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and Suzanne Valadon.
The Art of La Belle Époque: Post-Impressionism and Vincent van Gogh – ArtScapades will give a brief background of Paris during
La Belle Époque. With a focus on Van Gogh, the lecture will look at Post Impressionist art in general, including the artists that came before Van Gogh, worked at the same time but in different styles, and were influenced by Van Gogh.
Change Begins: A Look at Cézanne and Matisse – ArtScapades will delve into the life and work of Paul Cézanne, who, while classified as a Post-Impressionist, is considered the Father of Modern Art. And then we will move further into Modern Art with a look at the life and work of Henri Matisse.
Primitivism and Les Nabis: From the Jungle to the Garden – ArtScapades looks at artists who transitioned from Impressionism to a style that included symbols and metaphors to express their own nature. This lecture looks at the lives and works of Henri Rousseau, Paul Gauguin, Pierre Bonnard, and Édouard Vuillard.
Pointillism: From Dot to Dash – ArtScapades looks at the artists whose reaction against Impressionism led them to a more scientific approach to painting. This lecture looks at the lives and work of Camille Pissarro, Georges Seurat, and Paul Signac.
Symbolism: From Reality to Metaphor – ArtScapades looks at the late 19th-century art movement where artists were seeking to represent absolute truths symbolically through metaphorical images as a reaction against naturalism and realism. This lecture discusses the lives and works of Gustave Moreau, Odilon Redon, Gustav Klimt and Edvard Munch.
