ArtScapades presents lectures that follow genres in art from ancient times to the present.
Nightscapes: From Dusk to Dawn – ArtScapades focuses on how artists captured night scenes in different periods of art beginning in Medieval times, moving through Impressionism, and continuing on to modern and contemporary images. Included in this lecture are works by Rembrandt, Georges de La Tour, Claude Monet, James McNeill Whistler, Vincent van Gogh, Henri Rousseau, Childe Hassam, Edward Hopper, René Magritte, Roy Lichtenstein, and many more.
Cityscapes: From Masters to Modernists – ArtScapades will look at how artists portrayed cities in their works, from 17th realistic cityscapes to 20th century abstract metropolitan views. Included in this lecture are works by Johannes Vermeer, Camille Pissarro, John Sloan, Edward Hopper, Piet Mondrian, Georgia O’Keeffe, and more!
Gardenscapes: From Vista to Vase – Gardens, trees, and flowers can represent the beginning of life, symbolize love and passion, and perhaps most fundamentally, relay a space of comfort and hope. With a focus on Impressionism, ArtScapades will look at how gardens and flowers played an important role in the works of artists throughout history. This lecture will touch on works by Hieronymus Bosch, Gustav Klimt, Wassily Kandinsky, and Henri Rousseau, and will then look more closely at how flowers and gardens were captured in the works ofClaude Monet, Auguste Renoir, Mary Cassatt, and Vincent van Gogh.
Seascapes: From Ship to Shore – ArtScapades will look at how the sea has been depicted from 17th realistic seascapes to 20th century abstract water views. Featured artists include JMW Turner, Casper Friedrich, Claude Monet, Gustave Caillebotte, Paul Signac, and Winslow Homer.
Bookscapes: From Cover to Canvas – For centuries, books and reading have served as visual motifs in every artistic genre, from portraits of courtly elites to still lifes, illustrating the incredible power of putting books into art. This ArtScapades lecture looks at a wide range of artists who found innovative and provocative ways to put books, people reading books, and scenes from books into their works. Home, Sweet Home: Genre Scenes in Art -From the increasing importance of everyday subjects in Renaissance painting, through how modern artists incorporated the idea of home into their art, ArtScapades will chronicle the emergence of genre painting. This ArtScapades lecture will look at the works of artists including Bruegel the Elder, Johannes Vermeer, Mary Cassatt, Edouard Vuillard, Winslow Homer, Marc Chagall, and Roy Lichtenstein.
The Art of Portraiture: A Look through Time – ArtScapades looks at the history of portraiture in art. From ancient times to today, portraiture has told us fundamental truths, whoever the subject. By looking at who was portrayed, and how, we are able to gain insights into social, cultural, and political history that no other type of painting can offer. Italian Art: From Masters to Modernists – Italian art has left a profound and enduring legacy on the world, shaping artistic movements for centuries. From the Renaissance to modern times, Italian artists have created timeless masterpieces. In this lecture, ArtScapades will look at Italian art, highlighting art periods and artists from its earliest beginnings in Italy. Included is a look at art from the Renaissance, through Baroque and Rococo, into the so-called Italian Impressionist period of Macchiaioli, to Futurism and Expressionism.
Fashion in Art: From Cloth to Canvas – ArtScapades examines the history of fashion in art, and works of art that highlight fashion, ranging from the most basic to the most coveted garments and accoutrements. ArtScapades will discuss how depictions of clothing in art address many aspects of a culture, from social structures and gender roles to daily activities. ArtScapades will look at works by Jacques-Louis David, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, James McNeill Whistler, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Winslow Homer, Tamara Lempicka, and more.
Architecture in Art: From Masters to Modernists – ArtScapades will focus on how artists used and portrayed architecture in their works from the Renaissance all the way up to the 21st Century. This lecture will include a look at works by Canaletto, Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, Egon Schiele, Marc Chagall, Childe Hassam, Edward Hopper, David Hockney, and more.
Equestrian Art: From the Barn to the Track – ArtScapades will be exploring the most famous horse paintings throughout art history. ArtScapades will look at the different roles of horses in art, and discuss the allure horses have had for artists beginning at the dawn of time, and moving through to modern and contemporary images. Included in this lecture are works by George Stubbs, Rosa Bonheur, Edgar Degas, Pablo Picasso, Lucien Freud, and many more.
Mythology in Art: From Circe to Zeus – Mythology has been a theme in art through the years. In this lecture ArtScapades will look at the works of celebrated artists over time who have included mythological themes and figures in their work. Included is a look at the art of Sandra Botticelli, Caravaggio, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, John Singer Sargent, Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, and many more!
Art and Travel: Europe – ArtScapades looks at some of the world’s best-known works of art, and where they can be seen in museums in Europe. While many of these masterpieces are found in well-known museums, a few are not, so you may learn about new museums along the way to add to your next itinerary. Included in this lecture are works by history’s greatest artists spanning from the Renaissance to the Modern era. Included in this lecture are works by history’s greatest artists spanning from the Renaissance to the Modern era. The lecture looks at works by both European and American artists including Leonardo da Vinci, Pierre August Renoir, Vincent van Gogh, Henri Matisse, Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso, John Singer Sargent, Grant Wood, Edward Hopper, Jackson Pollock, and Jasper Johns, and more.
